In Julia Fox’s latest fashion experiment, the 32-year-old model successfully transformed a blue Hawaiian print beach towel with hibiscus flowers into a miniskirt. Fox posted her DIY creations on her TikTok and Instagram pages, calling the temporary creations “apocalyptic fashion.” In the video, she expertly shows fans how to cut a hole in the head and legs, fold the excess fabric, and then pin it back on after putting on the “skirt.”
She first tried it on in opaque black leggings and a casual graphic t-shirt, but Fox later unveiled the final look, in which she rolled up the skirt and cut a hole in the front to achieve a cut-out midriff. She accessorized with opera-length leather gloves, a top-handle bag from Rare Romance, pointed-toe knee-high boots, and black Reality Eyewear x Posse sunglasses. The statement accessories are perfect for the fashion-forward wardrobe she created with the help of stylist Briana Andalor.
Fox noted that towels are here to stay on the runways for a long time, a trend predicted for 2020 when Vogue reported on the history of the blankets (see Acne Studio and JW Anderson’s spring 2015 shows). She summed up her project on a positive note: “Anyway, I think it’s really chic,” she said, showing off her entire look from every angle.
Then buy similar towels to create a miniskirt like Fox’s. Then check out the voluminous metallic foil Zac Posen dress she wore to the New York City Ballet Gala on September 28th. Another attempt to repurpose unexpected materials to inspire her wardrobe.
